Speed Up Metabolism - Part One

How to speed up a slow metabolism

If you are struggling to lose weight, despite a healthy lifestyle, you’ve probably guessed that your metabolism is letting you down. When your metabolism is slow your body stores energy as fat, rather than burning it off. You need to speed up your metabolism to reverse this pattern.

What is a metabolism?

You may envision your metabolism as an organ within your digestive system that becomes sluggish and inefficient at times. But metabolism is actually the term describing all the chemical reactions involved in maintaining the cells of a living organism, such as your body. Basically, your metabolism is breaking down nutrients, such as carbohydrates, protein and fats to give your body the energy it needs to maintain cells and tissue while

functioning efficiently. Left-over energy is burnt off during your regular activities, or stored as fat cells. A fast metabolism burns off most of the excess energy before it is stored, while a slow metabolism leaves people feeling tired and sluggish, with energy stored as fat. Your age and genetic heritage do affect your metabolic rate, but only to a small extent. There are many different reasons for a slow metabolism, and by taking a few simple steps you can overcome the obstacle so your metabolism works faster, leaving you feeling more trim and energetic than ever before!

  Check your nutrient intake

Your metabolism needs a good supply of nutrients, such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and zinc, to repair and replenish your cells and tissues. If the food you are consuming does not contain sufficient levels of these nutrients, your metabolism is stuck with empty kilojoules that can only be stored as fat and your body will continually send “hungry” signals for more nourishment. Ask your doctor for a blood test to check your nutrient levels and adjust your diet to ensure you are maintaining a healthy supply of vitamins and minerals.

  Check your leptin levels

Leptin is a hormone that monitors how much energy you need to take in by controlling your feelings of hunger and satiety. If you become leptin resistant, your body receives a “starvation” message, prompting you to eat more and store the excess energy as fat rather than burning it off. Your doctor can test your leptin levels with a blood test.
